WHY EUROSCOLE?

The interest in scleral lenses continues to grow, in practice and research, evidenced by the number of manuscripts, blogs, and social media groups devoted to lens fitting, troubleshooting strategies, and determining the physiological impact of scleral lens wear on the ocular surface. I also predict that scleral lenses will soon become the global gold standard for irregular corneas and ocular surface diseases when compared to other contact lens modalities.

Given this reality, optometrists/Ophthalmologists should value the fastest-growing of these lenses and take time to nurture and develop their knowledge of their fitting.

Worldwide, there is a huge lack of education on scleral lenses. My intent is solely to educate my colleagues and to create a better scleral lens for our patients.

For scleral lens fitting, in-person meetings are necessary because, in my opinion, many practitioners may still be intimated by the large diameter of the lens and the troubleshooting. Touching the lens and applying it to the eye, will indeed help to break the wall between the lens and the most intimidated practitioner. Additionally, fitting and assessing the lens on-live, and personally using the various techniques that will be available during the workshops will convince clinicians that fitting scleral lenses is doable and it is crucial to include them in every practice.

Also, in my experience, for the courses discussing specialty contact lenses, especially scleral lenses, theory accompanied by a largely practical session makes them more successful. So, no one walks out from these meetings richer other than being more knowledgeable!

The European School of Scleral Lenses - EUROSCOLE - consists of workshops to be held in 20 countries in all continents, Europe, Asia, the Americas, Oceania, the Middle East, and Africa. Check the list of the different countries and the calendar.

In all countries, two workshops (of two days each) will be held a few months apart: The first will discuss the basics of scleral lenses and the second will discuss the advanced fitting using the different technology available and complications management.

The program of both workshops, basic and advanced comprises 3 hours of theory in the morning and 3 hours of practical sessions and wet labs in the afternoon.

The workshops are available for a maximum of 25 participants to give everyone the opportunity to fit and assess the scleral lens on-live, and personally use the various techniques that will be available during the workshops. This will convince clinicians that fitting scleral lenses is doable and it is crucial to include them in every practice.

The courses in Italy, France, Dubai, Jordan, and Lebanon will be held in local languages (Italian, French, and Arabic). In all other countries, the workshops will be held mainly in English.

Local Key Opinion Leaders will be invited to lecture in the workshops. Their presentation will be in local languages, when possible.

Key Opinion Leaders from the USA will also be invited to several workshops as well.

At the end of the workshops, a certificate of completion will be delivered.

This is an important project that requires much energy to prepare the clinical and scientific programs and to organize the logistics of the meetings in the various countries.
